The Boston Militia opened the 2013 WFA season with an overwhelming victory over the New York Sharks by a score of 70 – 0.
The Militia won the opening coin toss that ignited the fuse to an explosive night. Whitney Zelee received the opening kickoff and returned the ball 10 yards to the Militia 41 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Zelee bolting around the right side for a 59 yard touchdown and a 6-0 lead. The extra point kick was no good but the roar of first play started the Militia rumble.
On the night, the Militia scored 11 touchdowns and two 2-point conversions while missing 9 extra point kicks.
The Militia roared to a 34-0 led in the first quarter. Zelee led the team scoring with three touchdowns on runs of 59, 5 and 3 yards and two 2-point conversions. Asia Landrum scored on a 12 yard run and Allison Cahill hit Stacey Tiamfook on a 24 yard TD pass for the other touchdown in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Cahill ran for a 40 TD that gave the Boston team a 40-0 lead. The Militia continued to reload in the quarter and Cahill hit Adrienne Smith with a 74 yard pass and run TD at the 5:15 mark and a 46-0 lead. The defense stepped up again and stopped the Sharks forcing a punt that was blocked and the ball recovered by Nakita Bowman at the NY 7 yard line. Zelee proceeded to bolt into the end zone for the score and a 52-0 lead at the half.
At the 7:59 mark of the third quarter, Zelee took a handoff and ran 54 yards and for her 5th TD and the Militia led 58-0.
Once again the defense of the Militia stopped the Sharks with a 14 yard loss when Bowman and Jessica Cabrera stopped the NY offense and forced a punt attempt. The snap was high and over the head of the punter, who fell on the ball at the eight yard line where the Militia took over on downs. On the first play in this series, Tiamfook exploded 8yards into the end zone for TD and a 64-0 lead at the end of three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, Landrum closed out the scoring for the night on a 25 yard scamper and a final score of 70-0.
The Boston Offensive line was outstanding in this game with excellent blocking by Amanda Alpert, Oshodi Kehinda, Sherese Woodfine, Beth Kaleta and Stephanie Jeffers. The play of the “O” allowed Zelee to gain 193 yards on 15 carries and 5 touchdowns. The pass blocking was instrumental in helping QB Cahill complete 7 of 10 passes for 128 yard and 2 TD’s.
The Militia Defense was overwhelming the entire game stopping the New York Sharks offense throughout the night allowing only two first downs from scrimmage. The “D” line combination of Xaymara Saez, Nikita Bowman and Shana Segers lead the charge.
The Militia defense made 7 tackles for losses with Vicky Eddy Bowman making two, Segers, Nikita Payne and Saez had one each. Eddy also had a pass interception. The Militia had 4 fumble recoveries with Briannah Gallo and Bowman picking up two each and Bowman had a blocked punt. Jessica Cabrera lead the team in tackles with 4 followed by Bowman, Eddy, Segers, Chris Thomas, Deirdre Hiort and Jennifer Pirog with three tackles each.
Next up for the Militia is a Division cross over game with the IWFL 2012 Champions Montreal Blitz at the Dilboy Stadium with a 7:30pm kickoff.
