In one of the hardest hitting women's football games of the year, the undefeated Chicago Force and the Boston Militia faced each other for the first time in Evanston, Indiana on Saturday evening. The temperatures hovered around 90 degrees at game time and with the turf field the temperature was much hotter.
The Boston Militia's Mia Brickhouse took the opening kick off up field for 15 yards and the Militia offense started the day at their own 36 yard line and promptly moved the ball deep into the Force territory only to be stopped by a strong Chicago defense. Ashley Snyder's 39 yard field good attempt was blocked and with 12:14 in the first quarter.
The Chicago offense was surprised by a swarming Militia defense and punted to the Militia and on came the offense for the Boston contingent. In the 4 plays, Boston promptly moved the ball 39 yards into the Chicago end zone for the first score of the game with an 18 yard touchdown pass from Allison Cahill to Adrienne Smith for a 6-0 lead. The extra point attempt was blocked by the Force at the 8:57 showing on the scoreboard clock.
On the next series the Force moved the ball but was stopped on fourth down and short on a tackle by Molly Goodwin and the Militia took over on Downs. The Chicago defense then stopped the Militia offense and forced a punt.
Chicago took over the ball at their own 44 yard line and in two minutes marched right into the Militia end zone and kicked the extra point for a 7-6 lead with 2:47 in the first quarter. And that is how the First Quarter ended
To start the Second Quarter, the Boston team received the kickoff. The Militia offense behind with some strong offensive line blocking were able to pick up big yardage with runs by Whitney Zelee, and Chante Bonds and the passing of Allison Cahill to Amy Saur and Zelee and with Zelee crossing the Chicago goal line on a 9 yard run. Stacey Tiamfook scored a 2 point conversion and the Boston Militia took a 13-7 lead with 14:56 to go in the quarter.
On the next possession, Molly Goodwin forced a fumble and Chante Bonds recovered the ball and scored on the one yard plunge by Dorothy Donaldson at the 9:14 mark. The Militia tried for a two point conversion and failed. The Boston lead now moved to 20-7
The Militia defense once again stopped the Chicago team and took over on downs at the Force 46 yard line. It took two plays for the Boston Militia to move the scoreboard on an 11 yard run by Bonds and a 35 yard scamper by Bonds for a TD. Snyder's kick was good and the Boston Militia lead by a score of 27-7 with 6:10 showing on the clock.
The powerful Chicago Force offense was not to be denied and scored a TD of their own and closed the gap at 27-15 with 3:40 left in the second quarter.
Boston Militia offense then moved the ball and aided by a horse collar penalty against the Force scored on a 26 yard Snyder field goal and entered the half with a 30 – 15 lead.
The Militia defense started the second half and promptly stopped the Force into a punting situation. The Militia offense entered the field and began moving the ball. The Militia committed a rare offensive mistake when Tiamfook gained what appeared to be a first down but turned the ball over to the Force. However, the Militia defense stopped the Force in 8 plays and the Militia took possession of the ball.
The Militia then scored on a 60 yard TD on a pass from Cahill to Amy Saur who broke two tackles and romped into the end zone and with Snyder's extra point kick, the Militia to a commanding 37-15 lead with7:09 in the third quarter.
On the ensuing kick off, Snyder kick was high and the Force failed to cover and the ball was recovered by Vicky Eddy and the Militia offense marched back on to the field. And in seven plays the Militia contingent scored a TD behind a 2 yard plunge by Donaldson. A high snap on the extra point attempt resulted in a blocked kick and the Militia had a commanding 43-15 score with 2:55 in the third quarter.
The undefeated Chicago Force would not quite and their powerful offense moved the ball down field very rapidly and scored with 0:30 on the clock and closed the gap to 43-23 and that is how the third quarter ended.
The fourth quarter saw the Force hold the Militia intact and forcing the first punt of the game from Snyder.
On the Chicago's third play from scrimmage, Jennifer Powell intercepted a Force pass and ran it back 15 yards before being stopped and the Militia took over at the Force 41 yard line. The Boston Militia then put the closing stamp on the evening by running the ball on the next 9 plays and scored the evening final TD with a 2 yard run by Tiamfook and the extra point kick by Snyder and the Militia held an overwhelming 50-23 lead with 4:40 on the clock.
The Force offense attempted four passes. Each was incomplete and the final pass was picked off by Bonds at the 38 yard line. The Militia made many offense changes at this point and finished the game with some fine runs by Danielle Resha and Betsy Calkins and a pass completion to from Cahill Christine Kelley.
Offensive leaders for the Militia were Allison Cahill who was 13 of 17 for 253 yards. The Militia ground game produced a well respected 269 yards on the ground with Bonds gaining 64 yards, Zelee 57, Tiamfook 54 and Donaldson 49.
Defensive leads for the Boston Militia were Vicky Eddy with 8 tackles and Jennifer Olivieri and Molly Goodwin with 6 tackles. Recording a sack for the Militia were Olivieri, Goodwin, Jessica Penta, Jay Hodge, and Nikita Payne. Jennifer Powell and Chante Bonds each had a pass interception. Sade Williams forced a fumble that was recovered by Bonds.
The entire Militia offensive line did a great job of blocking the entire game allowing the Militia to run for 269 yards and gain 253 yards in the air for a total of 522 yards on the evening.
The Boston Militia will face the Indy Crash at the Dilboy Stadium on Saturday, July 16 for the Women's Football Alliance National Conference Championship with the opening kickoff scheduled for 6pm. The winner of this game will to go to the Women's Football Alliance Championship game in Dallas on July 30 and face the American Conference Champions for the 2011 Women's Football Alliance Championship.
