The women's football team, Boston Militia, overcame a slow start in this crucial game and was able to overcome a 6-0 first quarter DC Divas lead and beat the home team by a score of 37-24.
This women's football game proved to be everything that everyone thought it would be. Both teams demonstrated their skills with hard defensive tackles, strong running and passing and just an exciting game for the fans to enjoy.
DC scored on the opening series on a 9 play marched right though the Boston Militia defense and scored at the 9:39 mark of the first quarter to take a 6-0 lead. The extra point was missed.
The Militia was unable to move the ball in their first series and had turned the ball over to DC on downs to the Divas.
The Divas took the ball and marched to the Militia 20 yard line. On the next play, Jennifer Olivieri jarred the ball loose from the DC runner and Jennifer Powell recovered the fumble at the 19 yard line. The first quarter ended up after the first play on 5 yard run by Dorothy Donaldson with the Divas leading 6-0.
The second quarter saw the Militia offense start to move the ball with a 14 yard gain by Stacey Tiamfook. On the next offensive play Allison Cahill threw a deep pass to Adrienne Smith for a 73 yard Militia score to knot the game at 6-0. The extra point was muffed and the game was tied.
On the first play after the kickoff, Boston’s Mia Brickhouse intercepted a DC and scampered 18 yard in the endzone for the Militia score and lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the evening. Whitney Zelee converted the 2 point conversion and the Militia held a 14-6 lead with 11:57 to go in the second quarter.
With renewed excitement, the Boston Militia defense entered the field and promptly stopped the Divas next offensive set and forced another punt.
The Militia put together a 10 play drive that stalled on the Divas 14 yard line. Ashley Snyder entered the game and kicked a 24 yard field goal for a 17-6 Militia lead.
The DC team’s next offensive series was once again stopped and the Divas were forced to punt that was blocked by Boston’s Briannah Gallo and recovered by Molly Goodwin. Boston moved the ball to the Divas 32 yard line was stopped and Ashley Snyder kicked another field goal for a Militia halftime lead of 20-6.
The Third Quarter saw the DC Divas put together 9 play drive and score and the third quarter ended with the score the Boston Militia leading 20-12.
The Militia took over the ball on the Diva 23 yard line. Cahill hit Smith on a 22 yard gain and Donaldson boomed over for a Militia touchdown and Snyder kicked the extra point and the Militia lead was 27-12 with 13:03 showing on the scoreboard.
The Militia defense again put up a stone wall on the next Divas offensive set and the Militia took possession of the ball on the Divas 32 yard line. The Militia offense took over possession of the ball. However, the Divas put up a strong stand and forced the Militia team to settle for a 35 yard field goal by Snyder and with 8:49 on the clock, the Militia lead was 30-12.
The Divas offense came on the field and scored a TD with 5:10 left in the game and a Militia lead cut to 30-18 providing some anxious moments on the Militia sideline.
With the ensuing kick return the Militia offense marched 75 yards downfield and with 1:00 minute on the game clock, Whitney Zelee scored on an 8 yard run and with Snyder’s extra point kick, the Militia held a 37-18 lead.
The Divas, once again proving that they are an outstanding team, drove downfield for a touchdown on the last play of the game. The Divas two point conversion was stopped and the game was over with the Boston Militia winning by a score of 37-24.
Allison Cahill was 10-16 for the evening for 156 yard. Adrienne Smith had two receptions for 94 yards and a TD.
The ground game was lead by Whitney Zelee with 67 yards and Stacey Tiamfook gained 63 yards.
Ashley Snyder had field goals of 24, 42 and 35 yards and kicked 2 extra points.
Whitney Zelee converted a 2 point conversion.
The defense leaders were Chante Bonds and Molly Goodwin with 7 tackles, Briannah Gallo and Mia Brickhouse with 6 tackles, and Jennifer Olivieri with 5 tackles.
The offensive line responded well to the Divas blitzes and size and made some outstanding blocks throughout the game to allow the offensive drives.
On July 9, the Boston Militia will travel to Chicago to play the undefeated 9-0 Force at Evanston Township High School in Evanston, IN. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm.
