The woman's football team, Boston Militia, opened a critical game with the New York Sharks by losing their first coin toss of the season. But that was all they lost on this day. The Boston Militia prevailed in a huge Region 1 Women's Football Alliance game for both teams by a score of 43 – 06.
In the opening series, the Sharks took the opening kickoff and proceeded to run 12 plays and eat up seven minutes of the opening quarter before being stopped at the Militia 37 yard line by the Militia defense.
With 7:53 in the first quarter the Militia Offense entered the game for the first time and proceeded to march down the field in 4:06 behind the running of Adrienne Smith (11Yards) Stacey Tiamfook (15 yards) and rookie Whitney Zelee (37 yards). Zelee’s touchdown run of 19 yards with 3:47 in the first quarter put the Militia on the board. Ashley Snyder kicked the first of four extra points and the Militia led 7-0.
The Boston defense than stopped the Sharks in the next series forcing a punt with a little over 3 minutes remaining in the quarter. The Militia offense continued to power its way downfield behind some outstanding offensive line blocking picking up 38 yards on the ground. Allison Cahill completed passes to Smith (16 yards) and Kathryn Tylander (14 yards). Dorothy Donaldson scored the touchdown on a 2 yard plunge. The extra point kick by Snyder was good and the Militia led by a score of 14-0 with 11:09 in the second quarter.
On the next series, the Jennifer Powell intercepted a pass and the Militia offense once again entered the game at the 9:48 mark of the second quarter. The Militia than mixed up the run and passing game with Cahill hitting Amy Saur on a 19 yard reception and Smith for 23 yard. The Cahill picked up 30 yards and Zelee added11 with a 7 yard run for the TD and with Snyder’s extra point kick, the Militia were in command by a score of 21-0 with 6:01 left in the first half.
On the kickoff, Snyder proceeded to kick the ball out of the end zone and the Sharks took over at their own 20 yard line. The Militia defense than stopped the Sharks on tipped passes by Jennifer Olivieri and Alicia Harris and the defense forced another Sharks punt. The Militia took over the possession at the Sharks 35 yard line and marched into the end zone on a 4 yard scamper by Zelee. The extra point try was muffed with a bad snap of the ball and the scoreboard showed the Militia in control by a score of 27 - 0 with 1:54 in the half.
On the Sharks next series, Michelle Princi intercepted a pass and returned it 20 yards and the Militia offense marched onto the field and into the end zone and scored on a Donaldson run of 4 yards. The extra point attempted was once stopped with a high snap and the Militia domination of the first half came to a close with the Boston Militia commanding score of 33-0.
The second half opened with a 15 yard kickoff return by Tiamfook and was highlighted with a 29 yard field goal by Snyder with 12:08 on the clock in the third quarter. In this drive, Cahill completed passes of 12 yards to Saur, 17 yards to Smith and Zelee picked up 2 yards on the ground.
The Militia defense continued to shut down the Sharks and controlled the ball on the next series. The Militia offense finally stopped with a block field goal attempt by Snyder from the 23 yard line.
In the fourth quarter, the Militia’s Jennifer Powell came up with another interception and the ball with 14:39 on the scoreboard. The Militia offense powered its way down deep into the Sharks zone and scored on a Chante Bonds run of 9 yards and Snyder kicked the extra point to complete the Militia scoring for the day and 43 -0 score at that point.
The Sharks scored with 5:08 left in the game. The Militia was finally stopped on a drive and attempted a fake punt with Snyder picking up 19 yards and came up one yard short of gaining a first down.
The Militia closed the game with some excellent pass defense and an interception by Briannah Gallo, her second of the game and the Militia’s biggest victory of the season that gave the Militia the control of the Women's Football Alliance National Conference North Division and with two games remaining in the regular season and in control of their own destiny.
Some key statistics for the Boston Militia for the day include seven tackles by Jessica Penta and five tackles by Jennifer Powell. The Militia had 5 interceptions on the day with Powell and Briannah Gallo collecting two and Princi one. Jennifer Olivieri had the lone sack of the day.
The offense gained 236 yards on the ground and were led by Zelee with 54 yards, Smith 53 yards, Tiamfook with 47 yards, Cahill with 46 yards and Snyder with 19 yards and Donaldson with 17 yards.
Allison Cahill was 11 for 15 on the day and 123 yards and no interceptions. Smith caught 3 passes for 43 yards, Saur caught 3 passes for 35 yards, and Tylander caught 2 passes for 22 yards. Ginger Snow, Chante Bonds and Meredith Lowe each caught one pass.

The Militia’s next game is with the always dangerous Philadelphia Liberty Belles at the Dilboy Stadium on Saturday, June 4 with a 6pm kick off.
